nicaragua

February 2018

The middle of Central America.

Nicaragua gets visited by backpackers but not commonly by tourists. Unlike nearby Costa Rica, mass tourism and large hotels are not yet common here. While the country itself is not stunningly beautiful, there are some nice colonial towns and some sweet volcanoes.

We spent a week here one winter after taking a bus from Tulum. It's fantastically cheap. People are generally friendly, though many see you as a pack of dollars with legs. We took public transport and hitchhiked, stayed in cheap hostels, and swam in lakes with questionable sewage discharge nearby. It was a blast, and also a relief to cross into neighboring Costa Rica at last.
