luxembourg

June 2024

Rich and tiny.

Luxembourg is rich. It has one of the highest per capita incomes on the planet, no global city, and a well-educated and multilingual population. To me, it's an utterly fascinating country, where people speak the seldom-heard-of language of Luxembourgish, where Ferraris may park downtown, where there's hardly a speck of trash and nearly no violent crimes. The countryside is also gorgeous, with plenty of pretty walks and nice hills to explore.

We spent just three days here, staying in an unusual trailer park in the woods, and doing some nice walks and wandering the quaint capital. I was most stunned by the amount of young people here - usually such crazy expensive places don't have so many young people - and the amount of watchkeepers, selling watches worth tens of thousands of euros. The people were also super nice, and the country is closely connected with the much bigger surrounding nations of France, Germany and Belgium. It's an absolutely lovely place to visit.
