Indonesia
January - May 2010
One of the world's most fascinating countries.
While not all of Indonesia is beautiful - the heat, the slums, the trash, the deforestation, and the poverty can break the most hardened traveller - this country is packed with rarely visited and little explored mountains, islands and caves. There are probably more deserted islands, reefs and undiscovered caves here than any other country on earth.
In 2010, I spent six months in Bali and Lombok researching and writing my bachelor's thesis on environmental issues. I learned Bahasa Indonesia well enough to conduct my academic interviews in the language. Years later, I became aware of the massive karst areas of West Papua, and plan to return, someday.
